Hammerson plc, the developer behind Sevenstone, is sponsoring a Music in the Round summer school for children in Sheffield, providing them with a unique opportunity to learn from some of the country’s leading musicians.
The school will be held at the University of Sheffield’s Music Department from Monday 25th – Friday 29th August, with students led by professional performers Martin Cropper, Liz Hanks and Cian O’Duill.
The Highly Strung summer school will bring together a group of youngsters aged 11-18 year olds as part of an exciting yearlong project in four of the city’s secondary schools.
Working with more than 80 young musicians in the area, the professionals have hosted over 144 workshops since 2007.
Polly Ives, education and outreach manager for Music in the Round said: “The Highly Strung summer school is a unique opportunity for young musicians in Sheffield to learn from some of the best. It is also an opportunity which many young people can benefit from and something that they are unlikely to experience anywhere else.”
Carolyn Kenney, Project Director at Hammerson, commented: “We feel it is important that we support projects such as Highly Strung. Generating cultural awareness in the city is an essential element of its development. This project provides children with the opportunity to learn and foster talent with world class performers at their fingertips we are looking forward to finding some skilled musicians of the future.”
Established in 2001 the Highly Strung project has so far involved 450 string players in over 900 workshops. The Highly Strung summer school is one of a series of events which has seen Hammerson support a variety of Music in the Round and Music in the Community projects.
